Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 1
by Koyoharu Gotouge
Shonen Jump, 2018
Summary: When Tanjiro’s family is attacked by a demon and only one person survives, he is set on a path to learn how to be a demon slayer.
Likes: I was pulled along without thinking too much about it. I realized I’d been connecting little by little though when Tanjiro faces the boulder challenge. His interactions with those characters and what is revealed about them hit me hard.
Dislikes: There’s a lot of training montage. It makes sense because this kid needs to be trained. He has a naturally superior sense of smell and he’s strong from carrying things up and down the mountain but he doesn’t know how to use weapons but it felt like a lot of tell versus show.
Overall I’d like to continue the series. I’m glad I gave it a chance.
