This week’s questions are presented by Zezee with Books. There will be spoilers for chapters 32 through 47.
There were a bunch of good questions but a fair few of them I worried that my answers might spoil things so I thought I’d only answer one and maybe make one note.
Note: I cried again at the murders. I braced myself but it still hurt.
What are my thoughts about Joscelin and Phèdre’s responses to being handed over to the Skaldi?
I can see why Joscelin moves to fight and Phèdre doesn’t. One, Joscelin is a warrior and Phèdre isn’t. Two, Phèdre is much more pragmatic. As skilled as Joscelin is he can’t win and even if he managed it, they’d struggle to get back to the City. Three, Phèdre is already framing this as an assignation she isn’t willingly entering or getting paid money for but she hopes to get information (and keep Joscelin alive). We’ve also established that Waldemar Selig was someone Delaunay wanted to know more about especially after his teacher identified him as a threat.
Those murders shocked me. I suspected that Delaunay is dead by the time Phedre is telling this story, but I didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

You’re right, we do get foreshadowing from Phedre in the framing of the narrative. When I first read it, it shocked me too. It also felt so different from what I’d read so far which mostly focused on the social functions and assignations. Joscelin and Phedre in the back of the cart felt like a huge change.

Yea, it did feel different. More action instead of plottings.
