Almost American Girl
by Robin Ha
Balzer + Bray, 2020
YA Graphic Memoir
7 cups of tea out of 11
Summary: When Robin’s mother decides to move to America, she has a hard time. She isn’t confident in the language and struggles to make friends at first.
Likes: I could sympathize a lot. Ha did a good job of expressing her emotions and showing where they were coming from. The art supports this. We also get pieces of why her mom makes the decisions she does.
Dislikes: I wasn’t sold on Robin’s friendships with Minji and Soyoung. This was more told than shown. They didn’t seem to have that much in common.
Overall I felt like I got a lot out of reading this. I also want to read the made up comic series.
