The Tragical Tale of Birdie Bloom

by Temre Beltz

Harper, 2019

Middle Grade Fantasy

8 cups of tea out of 11

Summary: Birdie is a Tragical, under the supervision of Octavia Foulweather doomed to experience a Bad Ending. But she receives a letter delivered by the Winds of Wanderly. When she decides to write back her life changes.

Likes: I connected with this right away. I felt embraced by the narrator. And within a few pages I was impressed with the cleverness. Both Birdie and Prunella Crunch go on a character journey together. I love that they change but also stay true to themselves. Birdie’s quest for friendship breaks my heart.

Dislikes: The Blue Dragon was a little anticlimactic.

Overall this one didn’t get positive reviews from critics but Jessica Day George reviewed it favorably so our children’s librarian decided to give it a try, she loved it, and then she gave it to me to read. So glad we gave this book a chance. I do recommend.
