The Okay Witch

by Emma Steinkellner

Aladdin, 2019

Middle Grade Supernatural, Fantasy Graphic Novel

8 cups of tea out of 11

Summary: Moth finds out she’s a witch and about her family. Her mom doesn’t want to teach her so she goes to her grandmother after nearly giving her friend a concussion during a performance of the town’s witch-hunting history.

Likes: I love this art. It’s colorful and expressive. It reminds me of Giant Days, Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier, and Space Boy. My favorite panels are the first ones. We get an introduction to the main character without words and we don’t really need them. The color choices, expressions, and other details do the job well. I was fond of most of the characters. Mr. Laszlo as a cat, in particular, tended to steal the show.

Dislikes: The ending was a little rushed. A lot of threads were suddenly needing to be wrapped up after a dramatic final boss battle that didn’t have a lot of lead up.

Overall I also recommend this one for your fall TBR if you haven’t read it yet. I also want to see what comes next from this creator whether it’s a sequel or something completely new.
