Middle Grade Supernatural Graphic Novel
8 cups of tea out of 11
Summary: Marjorie runs her family’s laundromat after her mother dies. There’s a man who wants to take it away from them and make it into a spa instead. Wendell is a ghost who tries to help and sometimes accidentally causes a mess.
Likes: For the most part I found Wendell and Marjorie easy to root for. The world-building for the ghost world was interesting and the link to the laundromat made sense to me. The final third conflict might have been a little forced but I liked how things worked out. There wasn’t a point that I didn’t want to stop reading.
Dislikes: I didn’t like the human world art as much as the ghost world art. I found it a little stiff and unnatural but I did like the color palette shift between them. I didn’t have any sympathy for the absent dad. He shouldn’t have let Marjorie deal with the business and her life by herself.
Overall I would recommend this for your fall TBR. It’s spooky and cute while also tackling grief and growing up.
