Be Prepared

by Vera Brosgol

First Second, 2018

Middle Grade Contemporary Graphic Novel

5 cups of tea out of 11

Summary: Vera has a hard time fitting in with her peers but she figures by going to a summer camp for Russian immigrant children. It isn’t the fun she thought it would be. Sometimes it was a nightmare but she also made a friend.

Overall this one suffered mostly because I had really high expectations. I loved Anya’s Ghost (and have recommended that one dozens of times). This one fell flat for me but it wasn’t bad. It reminded me of Smile, it’s based on the Brosgol’s real experiences. But it doesn’t have a firm narrative structure. Also it ends on a huge life-change introduction. I wouldn’t mind reading a continuation. This is a classic, I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it, situation.
