Soul Eater, Vol. 2

by Atsushi Ohkubo

Yen Press, 2010

7 cups of tea out of 11

Summary: Maka and her classmates complete their remedial lesson. They also meet Death the Kid, Patty, and Liz. And they are introduced to Crona and Medusa who will play major roles going forward.

Likes: The art is still unique and cool. My favorite panels are the Medusa reveal in the nurse’s office and Death’s soul. The battle between Death the Kid, Liz, Patty, Soul, and Black Star is a hilarious sequence. Also how Soul protects Maka in the battle against Crona is powerful. Then there’s Stein, he’s scary but also really interesting.

Dislikes: As funny as it is to see Maka’s dad at the hostess bar, I didn’t feel like the scenes served much narrative purpose.

Overall I’m firmly carrying on with the series. The first volume made me conflicted but this volume made me happy.

Content:

Sexual – Medium, there is a panel with three naked women in the shower room

Violence – Mild
