Cocaine Blues

1st in the Phryne Fisher mystery series

by Kerry Greenwood

Poisoned Pen Press, 1989

Adult Historical Mystery

4 cups of tea out of 11

Summary: Phryne goes to Melbourne, Australia because she’s bored of her high-class life. She meets an interesting cast of characters, including a Russian dancer, and gets caught up in an investigation to bust a cocaine ring.

Likes: I liked that this was set in the 1920’s and in Australia. That was different.

Dislikes: It’s pretty obvious who the leader of the cocaine ring is. I also didn’t connect with Phryne. I have trouble with apathetic characters as narrators in general though.

Overall I didn’t hate this but I won’t be continuing the series.

Content

Language – Mild

Drug Use – Medium: smoking, alcohol, cocaine

Sexual – Medium, there’s a sex scene but it isn’t graphically described. You know what’s happening though.

A woman gets an abortion and abortion is discussed.
