The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror

by Mallory Ortberg

Holt Paperback, 2018

Adult Horror Short Stories (inspired by Fairy Tales)

2 cups of that one tea mix that I can drink but am not fond of, out of 11

Overview: This is a collection of eleven stories. They are inspired by fairy tales and other familiar stories like The Velveteen Rabbit.

Likes: “The Six Boy-Coffins” was the one I liked. There was plot structure and it was interesting. I also liked the ending.

Dislikes: The characters weren’t interesting, very few of the plots had follow-through, and only every now and then did I think the prose was clever.

Overall I came to this collection with high expectations and I only liked one out of the eleven stories. This was painful to get through but I wanted to give every story a chance.
