The Wicked Deep

by Shea Ernshaw

Simon Pulse, 2018

YA Contemporary Romance with Supernatural and Historical Elements

8 cups of tea out of 11

Summary: Every summer the Swan sisters (executed as witches 200 years ago) return to take over the bodies of three teen girls so they can drown the young men in the town.

Likes: This was so spooky and atmospheric, it gave me Hocus Pocus and “The Little Mermaid” vibes plus it had unique elements I also found intriguing. I really liked Hazel’s narrative too.

Dislikes: This didn’t feel like it was taking place in the summer even though it takes place in June. But I’ve also never lived on the coast of Oregon.

Overall this was a really good book to carry me from September to October. It was spooky and romantic. This book gave me what I wanted.

Language – Medium, some swearing throughout

Drug Use – Medium, multiple instances of teen drinking

Sexual – Mild, there is kissing and it’s implied there’s more but not shown
